The Project

* A new paradigm of digitally enabled industrial sustainability and resilience

Europe has a high level of dependence from imported materials, many of which have a great impact on its economy due to their application in high-technology products. Considering raw materials represent the largest cost for manufacturing companies in the EU, there is a clear need for improving the raw materials usage efficiency along the industrial value chains. The vision of DaCapo is to create a new paradigm of digitally enabled industrial sustainability and resilience in the EU.

The DaCapo project will focus its efforts in defining a new set of human-centered digital tools and services for the manufacturing industry capable of boosting the application of CE principles at different phases throughout the manufacturing value chains, enhancing the circularity of industrial processes and products.

The backbone of the project will be the development of an agile methodological approach supporting the decision-making accounting business models, material flows, relevant indicators and data-sharing circular strategies. Digital Product Passports (DPP) and a Circular Economy Decision Support System (CE-DSS) will be considered as high-level tools, facilitating the trustful exchange of assets, the selection of optimum circular stock management strategies, and the definition of informed and coordinated management decisions.

A Modular Digital Thread concept will be developed as a normalized method for orchestrating the gathering and contextualization of data at different points of the product lifecycle (design and engineering, manufacturing shopfloor, use phase, End-of-Life - EoL). This will enable the development of a range of circularity-enhancing digital tools and services based on the use of AI and Digital Twins.

The project will also deploy open RTO-hosted Didactic Factories (DF) providing showrooms, validation and training facilities for the EU manufacturing sector and society.

  1. Establishing an agile methodology for the efficient implementation of CE strategies in EU manufacturing value chains.

  2. Implementing a digital architecture to enable new sustainable and circular business models.

  3. Developing AI-based tools and Digital Twins (DT) for the new circular product lifecycles.

  4. Facilitating the uptake of the digital tools and circular business models by industry and society.
